Serene and Sustainable

A lakehouse designed for slow living and natural exploration

The story

Our client was seeking to build a contemporary and energy-efficient holiday home. They came to us seeking a warm and minimal space incorporating environmentally-safer materials. We prioritized and highlighted the natural beauty of the materials and let the quality of the finishes speak.

The approach

Pursuing a light on the land approach to design that prioritized reclaimed materials in contemporary expressions as well as environmentally-safer, artisan finishes in every room. Keeping a purpose-built environment required custom furniture to meet the architectural style, including a built-in desk positioned against a wall of glass and bespoke bunk beds that never leave anyone feeling as though they are sleeping in a cave.

Key design considerations

  • Sound dampening acoustic slat treatment was applied in the sleeping, laundry and living spaces to manage sound from hard surfaces and large volumes

  • Custom white oak millwork designed as wardrobes in place of closets

  • Automated window coverings and audio-visual equipment were concealed with bespoke valances and cabinetry

  • Textiles were selected for durability and comfort include Oeko-Tex certified bamboo, linen, and cotton fabrication to ensure they hold up wash after wash while delivering a casual, lived-in feel

  • Carbon-neutral wall cladding and countertops, handmade, recycled clay tiles and locally made light fixtures

The result is a warm and comfortable holiday home with space to host and a solid connection to the outdoors.
