A Study in Summer: Materials, Mood, and Memory

June 09, 2025

What inspired this summer mood board? Was there a moment, feeling, or place that sparked it?

This summer mood board was inspired by play and the easy, lighthearted rhythm we lean into during our northern summers. It’s about capturing the sense of freedom and simplicity that defines the season – bare feet on warm patios, the flicker of sunlight through leaves, the quiet joy in lingering just a little longer.

How did you start this flat lay?

The word play began the process – it’s naturally expressed and presented during the summer months. The kind that feels effortless – sunlight reflecting off the water, the filtered light of a garden canopy, the scent of warm herbs in the breeze, the ease of slipping outdoors with flip-flops with no jacket. There’s a pace to summer that invites pause. That ease and softness became the foundation for selecting materials, colors, and textures.

What’s the hero piece of the board?

The teal panelling. It strikes that balance of playfulness yet sophistication. It anchors the palette without overwhelming it, bringing a richness that feels at home.

If this mood board has a scent or a soundtrack, what would it be?

The scent would be citrus and bergamot — a clean, bright scent with a hint of edge. And the soundtrack? Almost Famous. Elton John. The Beach Boys. A little Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s carefree yet soulful — a mix that feels like open windows and golden hour.

What’s one material on this board you think is underrated or underused in the interior design world?

Concrete. When it’s well poured, it has this subtle refinement – beautiful in its simplicity, never fussy. In Calgary, where evenings cool quickly, it absorbs the day’s warmth and radiates it into the night, extending the comfort of time spent outdoors. It’s a quiet performer.

This collage was inspired by the warm tones and layered textures of our principal designer’s flat lay. It echoes the quiet playfulness of summer—soft shadows, sunlit water, the curved lines of nature and architecture in harmony. There’s a sense of ease in the composition, a dreamlike rhythm that drifts between land and sea, memory and moment. Like the flat lay, it’s rooted in simplicity, but alive with detail—a visual pause that invites a second look.
